Reporting what people say 16/17 ep.14

Reporting what people say 16/17 ep.14

In this week's Premier Skills English podcast, Rich and Jack talk about the latest from the Premier League - there were big wins for Liverpool and Chelsea! We analyse some of the things that Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp said after the match. The language focus is on reporting verbs. We also have news about our Premier Skills Fantasy Football team, a new football phrase for you to guess and news about our fantastic new competition. Enjoy!

How much did you understand?

Vocabulary

In the podcast, Rich and Jack used some words and phrases that might be new for you. You can see two examples here:

Two goals from Sadio Mane helped put the Reds one point clear of Chelsea at the top of the table.

You can imagine Jurgen Klop shouting on the touchline.

There were a few more tricky words in the podcast. Can you remember all of them? Try the activity below, then, listen to the podcast again to hear how we used the words in context. This can really help with understanding.

Activity 1: In this activity, have a look at the vocabulary and try to match it to the correct definition.
Can you match the words to their definitions?

Pedro played well in Chelsea's 5-0 win against Everton.

Language - Reporting Verbs

Reporting verbs are verbs which are used to tell people what another person said. The most common reporting verbs are 'say' and 'tell'. You may have heard them being used in the podcast. Here are a couple of examples:

Jurgen Klopp said that he was really happy.

Jurgen Klopp told his players to stay cool.

When we use 'say' and 'tell' to report what someone said, we use a different structure. 'Say' usually has a verb + (that) + clause pattern while 'tell' uses a verb + direct object + (that) + clause pattern. 'Say' and 'tell' are neutral in meaning so if we want to tell people how the person was feeling or what he or she was doing we need to use different reporting verbs. Some reporting verbs often follow the same pattern as 'say' and others follow the same pattern as 'tell'.

Say Tell
admit convince
agree inform
claim persuade
complain promise
confirm remind
explain advise
promise urge
suggest notify

Note: Some reporting verbs can follow both patterns. Let's look at the word 'promise'. Both of these examples would be correct:

He promised to work harder in the furure.

He promised his teacher to work harder in the future.

In this activity, try to use the correct reporting verb. Try to think of the meaning and the correct pattern.

Activity 2: In this activity, try to create sentences that use different reporting verbs.
Can you put the words in the right order?

Jurgen Klopp must have been happy after Liverpool's 6-1 win.

Reporting Verbs - Meaning

When we want to report something that has someone has said we often concentrate too much on form instead of meaning. We think about changing the verb forms more than thinking about which reporting verb to use. We often use 'said' and 'told' too much. Take a look at this example from the podcast. Which phrase is the best?

Jurgen Klopp said that his players will work harder.

Jurgen Klopp has told his players to work harder.

Jurgen Klopp has urged his players to work harder.

The third sentence is the best. The first two are grammatically correct but only the third sentence tells the listener what is really happening. 'To urge' means to encourage or persuade strongly so this phrase can tell the audience what Klopp is doing and how he's feeling. The other two sentences don't tell us this. In the podcast, we asked you to complete three sentences with appropriate reporting verbs. Here are the sentences:

  1. Arsene Wenger ___________ his team looked flat in the North London Derby.
  2. Antonio Conte ____________ Eden Hazard and Chelsea's performance.
  3. The manager _____________ about the referee after his penalty decision.

Write your sentences in the comments section at the bottom of the page. Then, write some more sentences for other learners to guess. You can either think of sentences yourself or find some reporting verbs on a sports website. The BBC's football section is a good place to look.

In this activity, try to remember the sentences from the previous activity and type in the correct reporting verb.

Activity 3: Can you remember the sentences from the previous activity? Now, you have to write the correct reporting verb in each gap.
Can you remember the reporting verb?

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the 25,000th Premier League goal at the weekend.

Another example:

Zlatan Ibrahimovic joked that he had scored 25,000 Premier League goals!

Welcome

Rich: Hello my name’s Rich

Jack: and I’m Jack

Rich: and welcome to this week’s Premier Skills English podcast

Jack: Where we talk about football and help you with your English.

Rich: And this week we’re not only going to help you with your English but also have news about a fantastic new competition!

Latest news headlines

Jack: Let’s start with the Premier League headlines this week.

Rich: Liverpool go top after hitting Watford for six.

Jack: Liverpool went to the top of the Premier League table for the first time this season. Liverpool looked brilliant as two goals from Sadio Mane and one each from Philippe Coutinho, Emre Can, Roberto Firmino and Georginio Wijnaldum put the Reds one point clear of Chelsea.

Rich: Chelsea give a five-star performance.

Jack: Chelsea beat Everton 5-0 and Eden Hazard and Pedro were in great form as Antonio Conte’s side continue their climb up the table. The Blues have won their last five Premier League matches without conceding a goal and scoring 16!

Rich: Zlatan grabs goal number 25,000.

Jack: The 25,000th goal of the Premier League was scored on Sunday. It was Zlatan Ibrahimovic who got the goal. When he was told about it after the match, he joked that he thought it was him who had scored 25,000 goals!

Competition

Rich: The big news on Premier Skills English for you this week is that we have a new competition for you! It’s called the Big Football Quiz!

Jack: That’s right and you could win a Premier League match ball. The Nike Orden 4 is exactly what is used on matchday and is worth about £100.

Rich: To have a chance of winning this great prize all you have to do is answer 10 questions. Five of them test your Football English and five of them test your football knowledge.

Jack: The Big Football Quiz is on our home page and there is also a link on the side of this page. Remember you need to be logged in to do the big football quiz. Let us know in the comments section if you have any questions or send us an email at premierskills@britishcouncil.org

Player of the Week

Jack: Some fantastic performances at the weekend. Eden Hazard’s goal for Chelsea was brilliant and Pedro played really well for Chelsea, too. Zlatan and Pogba were looking good for Manchester Utd but I imagine you want to choose a Liverpool player, RIch.

Rich: I think I must, Jack! Liverpool were brilliant in their 6-1 win against Watford. Philippe Coutinho is my player of the season so far but our player of the week this week is ……..Sadio Mane.

Jack: Yeah, he got two of Liverpool’s six and he is getting better every week.

Rich: Do you agree with our choice? Let us know in the comments section. Before we move on to the language focus let’s talk to Stevie Statto, in  - Stats Amazing!!

Jack: So Stevie, what stat have you got for us this week.

Stevie: Zlat an Ibra him ovish scored the 25,000th Premier League goal at the weekend. But, back in 1992 when the Premier League began - Manchester United conceded the first ever Premier League goal. It was scored by Sheffield United and Manchester United lost the match 2 1.

Rich: Thanks for that stat, Stevie!

Language

Jack: I missed the football yesterday.

Rich: How come?

Jack: We had a family dinner. I couldn’t miss it and that meant I had to miss all the football.

Rich: Nightmare. Is your dad not a football fan?

Jack: No, he’s not, not really. He’s more of a rugby fan.

Rich: Oh dear. I’m sorry to hear that.

Jack: So, tell me. What happened?

Rich: OK, I know you know, but Liverpool went top of the Premier League. They were brilliant.

Jack: 6-1. THe biggest result of the season.

Rich: Coutinho was brilliant; Firmino, Mane, Lallana all superb - we could have scored ten.

Jack: And, what happened in the other matches?

Rich: Jurgen Klopp said that he was really happy.

Jack: Yeah, I’m sure he was. 6-1 is a great result, so what about the other matches….

Rich: I think Liverpool can win the Premier League you know

Jack: Is that you or Jurgen Klopp speaking.

Rich: That’s me. Jurgen Klopp has told his players to stay cool.

Jack: Not like you! There were some other matches yesterday, you know……

Rich: No, I know. I’m maybe getting a bit too excited about Liverpool. Klopp has played down talk of winning the Premier League and he’s urged his players to work hard and concentrate on their performances.

Jack: What about the North London Derby. It was a big game you know…

Rich: Yeah, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, the Manchester clubs...Klopp has warned them that this lIverpool team is not the same team as two years ago.

Jack: The North London Derby!

Rich: Oh yeah, a draw, it finished 1-1, very boring.

Jack: Thanks. At last.

Sting

Rich: We’ve just been talking about what Jurgen Klopp said after Liverpool’s 6-1 win against Watford. We used some different verbs to show what Jurgen Klopp said or how he felt after the match. These verbs are called reporting verbs.

Jack: Reporting verbs are verbs we can use to describe what someone else said and how they felt at the time.

Rich: The most common reporting verbs are say and tell. Rich used these in the previous section. They are quite neutral. The one thing that is important to remember is to use ‘tell’ with an object.

Jack: So, Rich said ‘Jurgen Klopp told his players to stay cool’. ‘His players’ is the object here.

Rich: But, some reporting verbs have much more meaning. Let’s take two examples. The verbs ‘urge’ and ‘warn’.

Jack: Rich said ‘Klopp urged his players to work hard’. The form of the sentence is the same as using ‘tell’ but the sentence has much more meaning. The verb urge means to persuade or encourage someone very strongly.

Rich: So, when I used ‘urge’ you can imagine Jurgen Klopp shouting on the touchline, jumping up and down saying ‘come on, work hard’. Because the verb ‘tell’ is neutral you can’t imagine this.

Jack: It’s the same with ‘warn’. Rich said; ‘Klopp has warned them that this Liverpool team is not the same as two years ago’. By using the reporting verb ‘warn’ the other teams should be a little bit scared or frightened because Klopp is warning them, he’s challenging them.

Rich: Yes, it has a much stronger meaning than saying ‘Klopp said……’ or ‘Klopp told them…’

Jack: If you can use a variety of reporting verbs to describe what others say it makes your English better and more advanced. We’re going to give you three sentences and we want you to complete each one with a reporting verb. But you can’t use say or tell!

Rich: Number one: Wenger (banana) his team looked flat in the North London Derby.

Jack: Number two: Antonio Conte (banana) Eden Hazard and Chelsea’s performance.

Rich: Number three: The manager (banana) about the referee after his penalty decision.

Jack: Of course, there are lots of different possible answers and we would like you to write some of them in our comments section at the bottom of the page.

Football Phrase

Rich: Have you got a football phrase for us this week?

Jack: Yes, I have, but first last week’s football phrase. The phrase was a schoolboy error. I really don’t like this phrase but it means a very simple mistake. Watford made a few schoolboy errors in their game against Liverpool.

Rich: Well done to Liubomyr from Ukraine and Shobonenek from Russia. You two were the only listeners to get the right answer, last week.

Jack: This week’s phrase is ***** **********. The second word in this phrase means a person or a team that has a chance of winning something. The first word is what all the Premier League teams are trying to win - the Premier League *****! So, I would say that Liverpool are now major ***** ********* but there are five or six other teams that are in contention, too.

Rich: Tricky but I think that final sentence might give a few of our listeners a helping hand.

Prediction

Rich: Last week’s prediction was the North London Derby between Arsenal and Tottenham and after Jack scored the first perfect score of the season, last week, this week I’m happy to say that I got the score spot on! The North London Derby finished 1-1, exactly as I had predicted.

Jack: Our listeners and I went for an Arsenal win so no points for us. That takes you back into the lead in our prediction league, Rich. You’re on 7 points, I’m on 6 and our listeners are on 4. Come on! We know you can do better out there!

Rich: No Premier League matches this weekend because of the international break so let’s finish for this week.

Jack: Don’t forget to write your answers to our questions and make a guess at our football phrase in the comments below. And remember to take a look at our Fantasy Football page and join in the discussions!

Rich: Bye for now and enjoy your football!

1.Liverpool will do better than last year as I have said before. There are five or six challengers for the 2016/2017 title. Klopp is confirming his talent.
2. Arsene Wenger admitted Arsenal looked flat in its North London Derby.

The manager complained about the referee after his penalty decision.

Jack, Rich, is it possible to buy tickets for the Arsenal's match if I haven't got a membership? I'm afraid that they will be sold out before being available for those who haven't bought membership. I will be in London from 21st till 28th of November and would like to visit the match against Bournemouth.

Hi Shobonenok

It can be really difficult to get tickets for Arsenal games. The matches against Bournemouth (28th) and PSG (23rd) are already sold out (http://www.arsenal.com/tickets). If you become a red member you have a chance of buying a ticket on the ticket exchange system that Arsenal use on their website but this is not guaranteed. It's a pity you are not in London on the 30th as there are tickets on general sale for the cup match against Southampton. I wouldn't recommend buying tickets through unofficial channels.

If you want to see Premier League football during your trip the best match to go to would be Watford v Stoke City. It's not as glamorous as Arsenal but you've got a good chance of getting a ticket!

Sorry I couldn't be more help but I hope you enjoy your trip!

Hi Rich!
Thank you for your answer.
Ohh, unfortunately all tickets for the mentioned match in Watford are already sold out :(
I've never bought tickets through unofficial channels even in Russia, so, there is no opportunity to see Premier League football.
I haven't known that it's too difficult to buy tickets in the UK. It's much easier to do it in Russia.

Wow! I'm surprised that the Watford v Stoke match has sold out. If you really want to see a match, you could watch a Championship game in London. Brentford play Birmingham City on the 26th of November (https://tickets.brentfordfc.co.uk/PagesPublic/Home/home.aspx). There are definitely tickets left but I can't guarantee the quality of the football; the prices are cheaper, however!

1. First of all, we can't choose anyone as the best manager in the Premier League yet. Consistency is still a key word and there are not even a half of total quantity of matches played. I am really admired by Konte's and Klopp's efforts, but still waiting for the effective Pep talk or other means of this coach to begin taking 3 points meantime it's neck and neck at the top of the table and City is slightly behind the leaders.
2. Arsene Wenger complained his team looked flat in the North London Derby.
Antonio Conte admired Eden Hazard and Chelsea's performance.
The manager grumbled about the referee after his penalty decision.
3. Football Union of Russia's website informs our national women's football team will play against Germany, Sweden and Italy at the Euro-2017 Championship. Ibrahimovic called Manchester the best city he has ever lived.

A football phrase is "***** *********".

As it stands its only 3 clubs that look ready to win the league. That is Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City.
Am sorry but i can't see Arsenal winning the league. As usual 4th at the end of the league.

What about Man Utd? Do you think Jose can turn around their fortunes in the second half of the season?

It's doubtful. Too many title claimants. Too late for MU to get through all of them to the top positions, IMHO.

Yes, I thought about it, so I changed the second word for others not to guess it. :-)
